Getting Started
Opening Kantrad for the First Time
When you first open Kantrad, a setup wizard guides you through six quick steps. An internet connection is required for first-time setup - both for email verification and to download the AI/dictation models.
- Welcome - A brief overview of what Kantrad does.
- Privacy & Terms - Read the privacy policy and diagnostic disclaimer, then check both boxes to continue.
- Your Profile - Enter your name, role, hospital, country, and email address. The email is used to verify your account and is where support replies will be sent.
- Verify your email - We send a 6-digit code to the address you entered. Enter it to activate your license. Each verified user gets their own license, and you can use it on a limited number of devices (typically 1 - your administrator can adjust this per user).
- Setup - Kantrad downloads its AI engine, vision model, and voice dictation model. This is a one-time download (~3.5 GB) and only happens on first launch.
- All Set - You’re ready to start.
Reusing your account on another device? Just install Kantrad and enter the same email at the verify step. We’ll send a fresh code, and once you verify, the new device replaces your previous one (devices are licensed per-account, with a configurable cap).
Loading Your First Study
There are three ways to open DICOM images:
From your computer
- Go to File → Open File (or press Cmd+O) to select individual DICOM files
- Go to File → Open Folder (or press Cmd+Shift+O) to load an entire folder - Kantrad scans all subfolders automatically
From a CD or DVD
- Open the DICOMDIR file directly via File → Open File
From a PACS server
- First add your server in Settings → PACS / DICOMweb
- Then switch to the PACS tab in the left panel and search by patient name
Understanding the Screen Layout
Kantrad has three main areas:
- Left panel - Your study list. Click a study to see its series, click a series to view it
- Centre - The DICOM image viewer with toolbars at the top
- Right panel - The report editor where you write findings and impressions
You can collapse either side panel by clicking the small arrow at its edge. The right panel can also be resized by dragging its left border.
What Happens When You Open a Study
Kantrad automatically:
- Detects the study type (CT Brain, Chest X-ray, MRI Spine, etc.)
- Sets the correct brightness and contrast for that type of image
- Chooses the best viewport layout (single view for X-rays, multi-plane for CT scans)
- Loads a matching report template if one is available
